As often happens, I lost touch with classmates as we left that school for high school. We went on with our lives, some off to college never to return to the town, others moving away as I did. For a long time, I did not think about those years. I was busy growing my family tree.
Standing in the new courtyard now, I hope the tree ended its life before the town decided to build the annex. I don’t like to think of it being destroyed, a chainsaw biting into its trunk and it groaning as it fell producing a cloud of sawdust. I want to believe that the tree having contributed to the life of countless children, simply succumbed slowly to nature and time.
